Cambodia Vows to Prevent Online Scams from Returning Following Crackdown
AKP Phnom Penh, October 14, 2026 --
Cambodia has reaffirmed its determination to eliminate online scams and prevent such criminal activities from returning, citing continued progress in the nationwide crackdown, H.E. Chhay Sinarith, Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions and Permanent Vice-Chairman and Head of the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Online Scams (CCOS), has said.
Responding to media questions about Al Jazeera’s report on the Long Bay case in Koh Kong province and its potential impact on Cambodia’s image and anti-scam efforts, H.E. Chhay Sinarith stressed that Cambodia had never denied the existence of online scams. Rather, he said, the country had been actively taking concrete measures to combat the crimes, with the Royal Government pursuing law enforcement action with the highest level of responsibility.
He noted that the results achieved by the Royal Government over the past year and more had further motivated ministries, institutions and authorities in the capital and provinces to intensify their efforts to eradicate online scam operations and ensure they would not return.
According to the senior minister, the Royal Government has taken firm and responsible action to clear out and completely dismantle locations and operational centres used by online scam criminal groups. Competent authorities are also continuing active investigations to identify and arrest ringleaders and all other individuals involved, so they can be brought to justice in accordance with the law, without exception.
Regarding Al Jazeera’s video report, H.E. Chhay Sinarith said the activities shown had occurred before Cambodian authorities launched their large-scale crackdown. He argued that, rather than undermining Cambodia’s efforts, the report reflected the progress made in suppressing and clearing online scam criminal groups from the locations concerned.
Looking ahead, Cambodia will continue to strengthen cooperation with other countries and international organisations to prevent transnational technology-based crimes from re-establishing operations or returning to Cambodian territory, he emphasised.
