The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH), led by its Head of Mission from the Philippines, conducted an observation, verification and reporting mission at Boundary Pillar No. 72, an agreed boundary pillar between Cambodia and Thailand, in Koh Kong province on Tuesday.

According to a press release from the Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) coordinated the field visit at 8:37 a.m. at Boundary Pillar No. 72, located in Cham Yeam village, Pak Khlang commune, Mondol Seima district, Koh Kong province.

The observation mission was aimed at providing the AOT-KH with a comprehensive and direct understanding of the situation at the agreed boundary pillars between Cambodia and Thailand.

The mission also demonstrated the Royal Government of Cambodia’s consistent position of resolving border issues peacefully through dialogue and bilateral mechanisms, in accordance with international law, existing bilateral agreements and the mandate of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), the press release said.

Cambodia reaffirmed its firm position on safeguarding the international boundary between Cambodia and Thailand as inherited from the Commission of Delimitation of the Boundary between Indo-China and Siam.

The Cambodian side stressed that its position is based on full and strict respect for international law, the principle of the inviolability of frontiers (Uti Possidetis Juris), the Franco-Siamese Conventions and Treaties, the Protocol concerning the delimitation of the boundary, and maps resulting from the work of the Commissions of Delimitation of the Boundary between Indo-China and Siam.

It also referred to the relevant procès-verbaux of meetings and abornement of the Commissions, the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the 2003 Terms of Reference (TOR), and other agreements and documents previously agreed upon by both parties.

Cambodia said these instruments and mechanisms provide the basis for peacefully resolving border disputes and achieving lasting peace between the two countries.
