MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum Showcases Khmer Royal Costumes from Five Historical Eras
AKP Phnom Penh, August 21, 2026 --
The MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum has opened a special three-month exhibition showcasing recreated royal and royal consort costumes from five major historical eras of Cambodia, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the evolution of traditional Khmer royal attire.
According to the APSARA National Authority, the exhibition features costumes representing the Funan, Chenla, Angkor, Chaktomuk, and Longvek periods, as well as wedding attire inspired by the legendary story of Preah Thong and Neang Neak.
Mr. Sen Kimsun, Manager of the MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum, said the costumes were carefully recreated based on sculptures at Cambodian temples and museums, as well as collections and historical references from museums abroad.
The reproductions were developed through extensive research and meticulous work over a long period, allowing visitors to see in physical form the traditional attire that they have mainly encountered through sculptures and other historical representations.
He noted, however, that the recreated costumes may differ slightly from the original depictions in sculptures, depending on the available references, images, and materials used in the reconstruction process.
Running from Aug. 19 through the end of November 2026, the exhibition is the museum’s first temporary exhibition specifically dedicated to the attire of kings and queens from five major historical periods.
The exhibition has attracted interest from local visitors, including Teacher Som Sawat of Preah Enkosei Primary School, who visited with 37 students. She said it was her first visit to the museum and expressed particular interest in seeing the recreated costumes associated with Khmer kings and queens.
As an admirer of Khmer culture and traditions, Teacher Som Sawat welcomed the exhibition and encouraged both Cambodians and tourists visiting Siem Reap to include the museum and the rare costume display in their itineraries.
The MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum has previously organised several temporary exhibitions featuring traditional Khmer clothing and silk textiles, including collections preserved by families in different provinces since before the war.
