Cambodia, China to Deepen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation
AKP Phnom Penh, May 28, 2026 -- Cambodia and China are committed to deepening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation and to working closely together across multilateral platforms to promote regional stability.
The commitment was reaffirmed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn and H.E. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during their bilateral talks on May 27, on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate in New York.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn thanked the Chinese side for inviting Cambodia to participate in the UNSC High-Level Open Debate under the theme “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System.”
He described the initiative as important for promoting global peace, security, stability, and sustainable development.
H.E. Prak Sokhonn also expressed gratitude to China for the care and medical treatment provided to His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromeath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, and Her Majesty Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.
Both sides welcomed the outcomes of the first “2+2 Strategy” meeting between the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Cambodia and China, held in Phnom Penh in April, and agreed to upgrade the mechanism to a “3+3” format in order to further deepen bilateral cooperation in political, military, and security sectors.
The Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister also thanked China for its efforts in mediating and facilitating the cessation of fighting and the peaceful resolution of the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict.
During the meeting, the Chinese side pledged to support Cambodia through the supply of oil, gas, and agricultural fertilisers amid Cambodia’s energy security challenges and fertiliser shortages.
The Chinese side also confirmed its readiness to host planned visits by Cambodian senior leaders later this year.
