Cambodia Requests Thai Verification of Suspected Border Gunfire Incident
AKP Phnom Penh, May 25, 2026 --
Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence announced that the Liaison Team of Military Region 4 of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) contacted Thailand’s Army Area 2 on May 25 to verify reports of suspected gunfire originating from the Thai side along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
According to the Ministry’s press release, a total of eight gunshots were heard on the night of May 24, including five shots at 7:57 p.m. in the Phnom Troap area and three shots at 8:08 p.m. in the Phnom Sambok Khmum area of Preah Vihear province.
The Cambodian side requested Thailand to verify the incidents, strictly enforce military discipline, and fully comply with the Joint Statement of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) dated Dec. 27, 2025.
The Ministry of National Defence also rejected allegations claiming Cambodian soldiers had caused a disturbance by firing two rounds in the Phnom Troap area on the same evening.
The Ministry described the accusation as “unsubstantiated slander” and reaffirmed that Cambodian armed forces have strictly adhered to military discipline and existing agreements between the two countries.
