ASEAN Chair Commits to Strengthening Observer Team to Support Border Ceasefire
AKP Phnom Penh, February 23, 2026 -- The ASEAN Chair has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the capacity of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to help maintain the ceasefire and support peace efforts along the Cambodia border.
The remarks were made by H.E. Ms. Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Cambodia, on Monday afternoon in Banteay Meanchey province, after joining an on-site visit to assess the situation of displaced civilians and inspect violations by Thai forces within Cambodia’s sovereign territory at Chouk Chey and Prey Chan villages and Boeung Trakuon area.
The Philippines, the ASEAN Chair for 2026, has already commenced consultations with both countries with a view to strengthening the AOT’s capability to help maintain the ceasefire, she said, underlining that these efforts are intended to allow time and space for bilateral mechanisms to work toward a durable peace between the two ASEAN neighbours.
As part of the consultation process, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines recently visited the area. According to the Ambassador, this visit contributed to gathering inputs from both sides of the border to make the terms of reference (TOR) of the AOT more effective.
H.E. Ms. Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo also noted that good offices will be made available upon request by either side and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the border issues.
