UNFPA and Japan’s Kitakyushu University Partner on International Study Programme in Cambodia
AKP Phnom Penh, Feb 20, 2026—
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) hosted an international cooperation study programme on Thursday for a delegation from Japan’s University of Kitakyushu, focusing on the agency’s strategic interventions in Southeast Asia.
This year’s programme brought 16 research students to Cambodia to examine the intersection of development work, youth empowerment, and cultural sensitivity.
During the session, UNFPA officials provided the students with deep-dive briefings on the agency’s core mandates, specifically its initiatives supporting women and young people.
A central pillar of the discussion focused on the implementation of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), with experts detailing how educational frameworks are tailored to remain culturally resonant within the Cambodian context.
The delegation also explored the evolving landscape of digital protection. UNFPA highlighted its deployment of digital tools designed to assist survivors of violence and provide resources for those facing online threats, including cyber-harassment and digital abuse.
"Our team was pleased to exchange insights and discuss potential future collaborations with these researchers," a UNFPA representative said. "We look forward to seeing how their findings contribute to the broader academic understanding of development in the region."
The visit underscores the ongoing partnership between international academic institutions and UN agencies in addressing the complex demographic and social challenges facing Southeast Asia.
