Cambodia Welcomes Singaporean Officers to ASEAN Observer Team
AKP Phnom Penh, January 16, 2026 —
The Ministry of National Defence of the Kingdom of Cambodia on Friday welcomed two military officers from Singapore to join the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), which is tasked with monitoring the border situation following the implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.
According to H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, the officers—Major Li Yiming and First Warrant Officer Toh Wee Chiang—arrived at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport this afternoon. They will serve as part of the ASEAN Observer Team led by Malaysia, responsible for observing, verifying, and reporting on developments along the border.
Cambodia has reaffirmed its full support for the ASEAN Observer Team and stressed the critical importance of strengthening the team’s role and mandate to ensure the effective and comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire and other agreed measures between Cambodia and Thailand. These efforts aim to enhance transparency, accountability, and mutual trust between the two countries, the spokeswoman said, adding that Cambodia welcomes additional participation from friendly nations.
The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Ministry of National Defence reiterated their firm commitment to fully and strictly uphold relevant agreements, including the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) held on Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between the two countries on Oct. 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements.
The Royal Government emphasised that these commitments are intended to facilitate a swift return to normalcy and to promote lasting peace, stability, and long-term security in the border areas.
