Cambodia, Laos Relations Rooted in Long-Standing Solidarity, Says National Assembly President
AKP Phnom Penh, January 08, 2026 --
Cambodia and Laos share a relationship grounded in long-standing solidarity, mutual respect and shared interests, Cambodian National Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary said on Thursday.
Samdech Khuon Sudary made the remarks during a farewell courtesy call by Lao Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Buakeo Phumvongsay, whose diplomatic term is ending, at the National Assembly in Phnom Penh.
She praised the ambassador and his colleagues for their contributions to strengthening bilateral ties, noting progress across legislative, executive, party-to-party, business and people-to-people cooperation that has delivered tangible benefits to both nations.
Cambodia and Laos are close neighbours and trusted friends who support one another in all circumstances, she said, describing the relationship as akin to that of siblings. She said successive generations of leaders have upheld the partnership based on trust, understanding, mutual respect and shared benefits, in line with the principle of “good neighbours, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term sustainability.”
Samdech Khuon Sudary also commended Laos for its recent development progress, particularly its transformation from a landlocked country into a regional land-linked hub through expanded transport connectivity, including railway and expressway projects linking Laos with neighbouring countries.
As small nations, Cambodia and Laos share common priorities in national development and in promoting multilateralism and respect for international law to safeguard peace, she said. Peace is essential, she added, stressing that war benefits no one and that Cambodia harbours no ambition to encroach on larger countries.
In response, Ambassador Buakeo echoed those views, underscoring the value of peace and expressing confidence that the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute can be resolved peacefully in the near future. He also briefed the National Assembly President on recent developments in Laos, including preparations for the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, which will assess past work and set policy directions for 2026-2030.
The ambassador thanked the National Assembly and its leadership for their close cooperation and support during his tenure, saying it helped ensure a successful diplomatic mission and further strengthened long-standing bilateral relations.
Cambodia and Laos mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. As part of the commemorations, Laos is preparing to host an upcoming state visit by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni.
