EU Reaffirms Readiness to Support Cambodia-Thailand Tension De-escalation Efforts
AKP Phnom Penh, December 09, 2025 -- The EU stands ready to support measures agreed by Cambodia and Thailand aimed at de-escalation, including humanitarian de-mining, stated the European External Action Service (EEAS).
In a statement released on Dec. 9, the EEAS said the recent exchange of fire between Cambodia and Thailand is an escalation in hostilities.
“The EU calls on both countries to exercise maximum restraint and return to the Joint Declaration signed on 26 October, and the confidence-building measures set out therein,” read the statement.
Since Dec. 7, the Thai military has renewed attacks on Cambodian territory and expanded to many locations in Preah Vihear, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Battambang, and Pursat provinces, involving heavy weapons, F-16 fighter jets, and toxic gas. These attacks have reportedly caused civilian casualties, damaged homes, temples, and health centers, forced the closure of hundreds of schools, and displaced thousands of civilians along the border.
Such actions constitute a grave breach of the Ceasefire Agreement and the Joint Declaration between Cambodia and Thailand, signed on Oct. 26, 2025, under the witness of U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair.
