Cambodian NA Disappointed with Thai NA’s Statement in Support of Thai Military Commander’s Provocative Pre-Retirement Plans
AKP Phnom Penh, August 11, 2025 --
The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia expressed its profound disappointment regarding the statement of support by H.E. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Thailand, for Lt. Gen. Boonsin Padklang, the Commander of the Second Army Region of Thailand, published in Thai language on the official website of the Thai NA and in The Nation Thailand newspaper.
On Aug. 10, 2025, Lt. Gen. Boonsin Padklang announced his pre-retirement plans, to be executed within his remaining 51 days of service: first, to seize the TA KRABEY Temple from Cambodia's legitimate control, and second, to close the TAMONE THOM Temple, which is situated within the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia.
“This announcement is the irrefutable evidence of a deliberate and premeditated act of provocation and an attempted invasion of Cambodian sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Cambodian NA stressed in a press statement released this evening.
The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia considers the statement of support by H.E. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to be a serious violation of the ceasefire agreement and an act of encouragement that elevates the Thai military's provocations into a policy endorsed by the Thai legislative institution, it stated.
“The National Assemblies of both our nations, as representative institutions of our people, should applaud the generally calm and stable situation along our shared border. We must continue to build upon this positive momentum rather than engage in actions that hinder the restoration of peace, stability, and normal relations between our two countries,” read the press statement. “This outcome is desired by our people and the entire international community, as evidenced by the widespread commendation and support for the ceasefire agreement and the positive outcomes of the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee.”
According to the statement, the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia considers such comment as irrefutable evidence of an act of provocation and a deliberate, premeditated attempt to invade the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia. This act constitutes an obvious violation of the ceasefire agreement reached during the special meeting on July 28, 2025, and the spirit of the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on Aug. 7, 2025. Furthermore, this declaration is also a serious breach of the ASEAN Charter, the United Nations Charter, and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia also called upon the international community. particularly the international partners that diligently worked to help achieve this hard-won ceasefire, to strongly urge the Thai counterpart to honour the ceasefire agreement, not only in words, but also in actions. This must be demonstrated by ceasing all acts of violation and immediately dismantling and completely removing the barbed wire that it has covertly installed on the Cambodia's sovereign territory.
The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia took the opportunity to express its profound gratitude to H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, for initiating, facilitating, and hosting the mediation meetings between Cambodia and Thailand. It also acknowledged the crucial roles played by the United States and the People's Republic of China, and the sincere support from ASEAN members, dialogue partners, and other partners in the region and around the world. Their collective engagement was vital in reaching a positive solution. It especially recognised with deep appreciation the role of H.E. President Donald Trump in these efforts, which reflects a joint commitment to peace, stability, security, and cooperation for the safety and livelihood of the Cambodian and Thai people, and for normalcy and prosperity within the ASEAN Community.
“The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia wishes to reaffirm Cambodia's unwavering stance: to cherish peace, defend peace, and to be a friend to all countries in the region and across the globe. Cambodia is also actively working to promote peace through various initiatives, such as the Universal Peace Charter, which was initiated by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, to advance inclusive dialogue, build trust, foster mutual understanding. and enhance global cooperation for peace and shared prosperity,” the press statement concluded.
