MPTC Dismisses Thai Accusation, Calling It a Malicious Attempt to Smear Cambodia
AKP Phnom Penh, July 07, 2025 --
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC) of Cambodia this morning issued a strong rebuttal to social media claims circulating in Thailand that accused Cambodia of collaborating with North Korean hackers to launch cyberattacks on Thai institutions.
“The MPTC would like to clarify that the Royal Government of Cambodia has no connection whatsoever with North Korean hacker groups, which is contrary to these accusations,” said the Ministry in an official statement, stressing, “The MPTC considers this allegation to be a malicious attempt by Thailand to tarnish Cambodia's reputation on the international stage, as similar actions have been observed in the past.”
On the contrary, the statement added, the MPTC has also observed that, over the past two weeks, a Thai hacker group known as BlackEye-Thai has carried out cyberattacks against nearly all of the Cambodian government's online systems; however, these attempts were effectively thwarted by cybersecurity systems and have only minor impacts.
In light of this, the Ministry urged the public to be aware of these facts and to pay utmost caution with regard to false information being disseminated on social media.
According to the Anti-Fake News Committee of the Ministry of Information, approximately 1,800 cases of fake news were detected in the first half of 2025, while the second quarter saw an increase in the numbers, especially on the border topic, amid the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border dispute since late May.
H.E. Tep Asnarith, spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, told AKP that the number of fake news related to the Cambodia-Thailand border alone that the committee had recorded is more than 180 cases in the second quarter of 2025.
The spokesperson said that in the context of the current border crisis, fake news is being distributed and published almost every day, especially on social media that unfortunately originated from some well-known press abroad.
Those media outlets and content creators have betrayed their professional conscience and failed to ensure integrity, transparency, impartiality, and balance of information in their reporting, but instead have used the media as a tool to serve the politics of some extremist groups who chose war over peace by avoiding the legal mechanism /international laws in border settlement between the two countries.
