More Siamese Crocodile Eggs Discovered in Cardamom Mountains National Park
AKP Phnom Penh, June 25, 2025 --
Three more wild nests of Siamese crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis), containing a total of 43 eggs, have been discovered in the Chhay Reap and O' Som areas of Cardamom Mountains National Park.
The discovery, made in mid-June 2025, was a joint effort by the Forestry Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Environment, Fauna & Flora – Cambodia Programme, and community wardens.
According to a joint press release, 34 of the 43 eggs were fertilised and are now under close monitoring and protection by conservation experts and the local community. The eggs are expected to hatch around August.
This latest discovery follows the successful identification of 65 eggs in 2024, which resulted in 60 hatchlings being released into the wild, the statement added.
The Siamese crocodile is listed as a critically endangered species globally. The back-to-back discoveries over the past two years highlight the success of ongoing conservation efforts and reinforce the significance of the Cardamom Mountains as a crucial habitat. These findings offer renewed hope for the recovery of the species.
