Cambodian Information Minister Urges Fight Against Fake News to Protect Tourism Confidence
AKP Phnom Penh, May 30, 2025 --
H.E. Neth Pheaktra, Minister of Information, has emphasised the importance of countering fake news to safeguard public confidence, particularly within Cambodia’s growing tourism sector.
He made these remarks at a press conference on “Promoting tourism campaign during the green season and the fight against fake news,” held at the Ministry of Information on May 29 afternoon.
Minister Neth Pheaktra stated that fake news must not be allowed to spread fear or concern among tourists. “Ensuring that Cambodia remains a country of reliable and accurate information is vital — especially in tourism. Fake news must not be permitted to cause panic or anxiety among visitors,” he said.
Since early 2025, the Ministry of Information has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism to jointly promote Cambodia’s tourism potential and address the spread of misinformation. According to the Minister, every individual can play a dual role — as both a promoter of tourism and a defender against disinformation.
“Fighting fake news is not just about protecting information security,” H.E. Neth Pheaktra added. “It also builds public trust, strengthens the country’s image, and ensures that what is broadcasted about Cambodia and its tourism is accurate and reassuring.”
He also highlighted the Green Season Campaign, aimed at encouraging domestic tourism and maintaining a steady flow of visitors during the May-to-October rainy season. The government is rolling out a series of activities to attract both national and international tourists during this period, stressing the need for accurate and comprehensive information to support these efforts.
H.E. Minister also referred to a recent tourism highlight: the rare solar alignment at Angkor Wat in March, when the sunrise rises perfectly over the temple’s central tower. Widely shared across social and traditional media, the event attracted significant global interest and underscored the timeless wonder of Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
Joining the event, Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak reiterated the importance of implementing the Green Season Campaign to promote tourist destinations and attract both domestic and international visitors. He also stressed the need to improve public services, strengthen tourism investment, and expand promotional efforts showcasing Cambodia’s tourism potential.
The Ministry of Tourism continues to work with relevant stakeholders to drive domestic tourism and maintain visitor momentum throughout the year, especially during the off-peak “green” season.
