Royal Ploughing Ceremony Signals Start of Farming Season, Says Senate President
AKP Phnom Penh, May 15, 2025 --
Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, has shared a message with the public on the occasion of the annual Royal Ploughing Ceremony, noting that the event serves as a reminder to farmers across the country of the beginning of the crop planting season.
Posting on his official social media accounts this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, also President of the Supreme Privy Council to His Majesty the King wrote: “Happy Royal Plowing Ceremony. […] Cambodia celebrates the Royal Ploughing Ceremony annually during the month of Visak (the sixth month of the Khmer lunar calendar).”
He emphasised that this significant tradition not only forecasts the country’s agricultural prospects—based on the oxen’s choice of food—but also serves to alert farmers that the planting season has begun.
Traditionally, the Royal Ploughing ceremony is celebrated to predict the year’s distribution of rainfall, thus rice harvesting, in the country through the oxen’s appetite of paddy, corn, bean, grass, sesame, water, wine.
