Cambodian First Lady Distributes Donations to Cyclo Drivers
AKP Phnom Penh, May 11, 2025 —
First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, Commissioner General of the Girl Guides Association of Cambodia, led a charitable event Sunday morning, distributing essential goods and financial aid to 388 cyclo drivers in Phnom Penh.
The event, held at Phnom Penh Capital Hall, was also attended by Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng, Chairman of the Cambodian Tricycle Foundation.
Each cyclo driver received a package containing 35 kilogrammes of rice, instant noodles, bottled water, soy sauce, cooking oil, orange juice, basic medicine, clothing (shirts, trousers, scarves, raincoats), toiletries (soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent), 100,000 Riel (approximately US$25) in cash, and a lunch box.
H.E. Governor Khuong Sreng emphasised the non-political nature of the event, stating its sole purpose was to support the livelihoods of cyclo drivers and preserve the traditional cyclo transport. "The Cambodian Tricycle Foundation aims to protect the cultural value of cyclos while improving the living conditions of their drivers," he said.
The 388 registered drivers currently benefit from the foundation, receiving a daily allowance of 7,000 Riel (approximately US$1.75) and a "Samdech Techo Welfare Card," which grants them free medical consultations and treatment at public hospitals.
The governor also highlighted past support during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Honorary President of the Cambodian Tricycle Foundation, provided food, masks, and sanitizers to the drivers.
First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony noted the foundation's dedication to supporting the elderly and underprivileged, particularly the cyclo-driving community. She mentioned that the foundation was established by Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Jan. 18, 2018, and that regular donations are made during major national festivals.
She further announced that in September 2025, during the Pchum Ben Festival, she, Governor Khuong Sreng, and his spouse will host a merit-making ceremony for all 388 cyclo drivers.
