Japan Supports Cambodia’s Health and Environment Sectors

The Government of Japan has agreed to provide US$852,189 to promote community health and sanitation and hygiene, and to raise awareness on environment issues.
The Grant Contract was signed on Mar. 9 between Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. MIKAMI Masahiro, and representatives of the recipient organisations. With an effort to contain the current “COVID-19 Community Outbreak”, known as “February 20 Community Event”, both sides signed the Grant Contract separately.
According to a press release of the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh, some US$760,341 of the total amount will be used for the “Integrated Health, Nutrition and WASH Project in Preah Vihear (Year 2)” to be conducted by World Vision Japan (WVJ).
In this project, WVJ will continue to conduct training and awareness raising sessions about health, nutrition, and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) to health and rural development officers as well as communities in Preah Vihear province aiming to improve feeding practices and usage of safe water. The organisation will also support to formulate water management committees and sanitation action groups in order to maintain safe water quality and better hygienic environment in the targeted area.
The rest, US$91,848, will be given to non-profit organisation Nature Centre Risen for the “Realisation of sustainable life environment around Cambodian citizens through promoting and raising awareness of environment issues (Year 1)”.
Under the project, Nature Centre Risen will promote and increase fundamental environmental awareness across Cambodia by creating educational materials to improve environmental literacy of the citizens, providing tools for research and observation of the environment and implementing training for environment education in collaboration with pagodas and health centers. Through this project, over 300 people in Cambodia are supposed to play a core role in promoting and raising awareness of environmental issues to the citizens. This will help improve the life environment in the whole Cambodia.
The assistance was made under the framework, The Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects which started in Cambodia in 2002 to support activities by Japanese NGOs to help Cambodia's reconstruction and development efforts at the grassroots level.
Since 2002, the Government of Japan has provided over US$45 million for 13 projects, mainly in the fields of primary education, health, agriculture and mine clearance in Cambodia.
