Samdech Khuon Sudary and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pledge Closer Bilateral and Parliamentary Cooperation
AKP Phnom Penh, October 9, 2026 --
Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, on Friday afternoon met with H.E. Le Minh Hung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, at the National Assembly Palace.
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the traditional friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Cambodia and Viet Nam, with particular emphasis on parliamentary exchanges, economic cooperation, connectivity and people-to-people relations.
Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed her appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to the Cambodian National Assembly delegation during her official visit to Viet Nam in late July 2026, describing the visit as a reflection of the close and longstanding relations between the two neighbouring countries.
She said the Prime Minister's visit reaffirmed the two countries' shared commitment to the principles of "Good Neighbourliness, Traditional Friendship, Comprehensive Cooperation and Long-Term Stability," based on mutual trust, respect and understanding.
The National Assembly President congratulated Viet Nam on its achievements in socio-economic development, economic reforms and growing international standing, expressing confidence that the country would continue progressing towards its vision of becoming a developed nation and a leading regional innovation hub by 2045.
She welcomed the outcomes of the discussions between Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and H.E. Le Minh Hung, particularly the signing of six cooperation documents covering drug treatment and rehabilitation, education, the preservation of friendship monuments, security, trade cooperation and bilateral trade enhancement.
Samdech Khuon Sudary also highlighted the importance of expanding economic and trade relations, including efforts to achieve the bilateral trade target of US$20 billion. She underscored the need to strengthen infrastructure connectivity, economic integration, security and defence cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Turning to parliamentary relations, she stressed that parliamentary diplomacy plays an increasingly important role in complementing government and party diplomacy, particularly amid complex geopolitical developments and global uncertainty.
She said regular exchanges between the two National Assemblies, including their leadership, specialised commissions, parliamentary friendship groups and secretariats-general, were essential to strengthening mutual understanding and advancing bilateral cooperation.
The National Assembly President also emphasised the importance of connecting younger generations, strengthening youth exchanges and maintaining close relationships among successive generations of leaders to ensure the continuity of Cambodia-Viet Nam friendship.
On regional and international affairs, she reaffirmed the two countries' shared support for ASEAN centrality, a rules-based regional architecture and an open and inclusive multilateral system. She highlighted the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting peace, sustainable development and a more equitable international order.
For his part, H.E. Le Minh Hung expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his high-level delegation during his first official visit to Cambodia as Prime Minister.
He congratulated Samdech Khuon Sudary on the successful outcome of her recent official visit to Viet Nam and conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from Vietnamese leaders, including H.E. To Lam and H.E. Tran Thanh Man.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister also congratulated Cambodia on its achievements and continued development under the leadership of His Majesty the King, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Samdech Hun Manet and Samdech Khuon Sudary.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two governments in key areas, including security, trade, economic development, logistics, energy and business.
H.E. Le Minh Hung also welcomed the growing cooperation between the two National Assemblies, particularly through their respective commissions, and recognised the contributions of the Cambodian National Assembly and Senate to strengthening bilateral relations.
Ahead of the 60th anniversary of Cambodia-Viet Nam diplomatic relations in 2027, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to organising activities that would strengthen people-to-people ties.
They also expressed their determination to maintain regular high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation across various sectors, further strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of their peoples and for regional peace, stability and prosperity.
