Cambodia has received high appreciation and strong support from parliamentary leaders and delegates from various countries for successfully hosting the Parliamentary Assembly conference in Phnom Penh, said H.E. Chea Thyrith, Spokesperson of the Cambodian Senate, on Aug. 27.

He made the remarks during a press briefing following the general debate under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully.”

The debate was co-chaired by H.E. Ouch Borith, First Vice President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Founding Chairman of the International Parliamentary Assembly and Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan.

According to H.E. Chea Thyrith, parliamentary delegates highly appreciated Cambodia’s hosting of the conference and expressed satisfaction with the theme of the general debate, which they considered highly relevant to the current global situation, particularly amid challenges to the implementation and respect for international law.

The delegates jointly called on governments around the world to strengthen the implementation of international law and resolve disputes through peaceful means in order to contribute to global peace, stability and shared prosperity, he said.

The international parliamentary leaders also recognised Cambodia’s historical experience in overcoming division and building and maintaining peace as a valuable lesson for the international community.

They expressed appreciation for the “Win-Win” policy initiated by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in 1996, which contributed to the complete end of the country’s armed conflict by the end of 1998 and paved the way for national unity, peace and development.

Moreover, the delegates held lively discussions on the “Phnom Penh Declaration” draft which is scheduled to be further deliberated and officially adopted on the final day of the conference on Aug. 28.

The three-day conference, being held from Aug. 26 to 28 in Phnom Penh, is organised under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully.”

The event brings together Speakers of Parliament and parliamentary representatives from 26 countries, as well as representatives of five international organisations, including the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and the Universal Peace Federation.

The conference provides an important platform for parliamentary leaders to exchange views and strengthen cooperation in promoting multilateralism, upholding international law and seeking peaceful solutions to conflicts, contributing to peace, stability and sustainable development at regional and global levels.
