UN chief appoints new special representative for Afghanistan
AKP Phnom Penh, 16 July, 2026--
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday announced the appointment of Rabab Fatima of Bangladesh as his new special representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.
Fatima, who succeeds Roza Otunbayeva of Kyrgyzstan, brings to the position over 30 years of experience in national and international civil service, said the UN secretary-general's press office.
Fatima currently serves as UN under secretary-general and high representative for the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states.
Prior to this, she was Bangladesh's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York between 2019 and 2022.
