Cambodia Welcomes Two Vietnamese Officers to ASEAN Observer Team
AKP Phnom Penh, July 09, 2026 -- Cambodia on Thursday welcomed two military officers from Vietnam who have joined the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to monitor the Cambodia–Thailand border situation following the implementation of the ceasefire.
According to the Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, Colonel Phung Thanh Quang and Colonel Ly Thanh Tam arrived at Techo International Airport at 1:00 p.m. on July 9, where they were warmly received by officers from Cambodia's Department of International Relations and the Cambodia Liaison Group (CLG).
The two Vietnamese officers will participate in the AOT, which is tasked with observing, verifying, and reporting on the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border following the implementation of the ceasefire.
The Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed Cambodia's continued full support for AOT, stressing the importance of strengthening the team's role and mandate to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire and all agreed measures between Cambodia and Thailand.
By welcoming observers from friendly ASEAN member states, Cambodia aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and mutual trust while supporting efforts to maintain peace and stability along the common border, the ministry said.
The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence also reaffirmed Cambodia's firm, sincere, and unwavering commitment to fully implementing the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) adopted on Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand signed on Oct. 26, 2025, as well as all other relevant agreements.
The Ministry emphasised that these commitments are intended to facilitate rapid recovery, restore normalcy in the border areas, and ensure lasting peace and stability between the two neighbouring countries.
