Better Roads Reduce Travel Time and Costs, Says PM
AKP Phnom Penh, July 07, 2026 --
Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has underscored that quality road infrastructure helps reduce travel time and transportation costs while boosting investment and economic growth.
The Cambodian Premier made the remarks while he and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Wang Wenbin were presiding over the official inauguration of the upgraded 45.489-kilometre section of National Road No. 7 from Skun Roundabout to the Kizuna Bridge Roundabout in Kampong Cham province on Tuesday.
Samdech Thipadei underlined that the newly expanded four-lane road enables faster, safer, and more efficient travel.
He noted that the improved road also lowers transportation costs for agricultural products by reducing travel time, which in turn helps save fuel, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and cut overall logistics expenses.
Samdech Thipadei added that, beyond facilitating travel and the transport of goods, the upgraded road is expected to attract more investment in industry, including factories, production facilities, and commercial establishments along the route, thanks to improved connectivity.
Reaffirming the Royal Government's infrastructure policy, the Prime Minister said roads remain the "arteries of the national economy," with continued priority being given to the development of road, rail, waterway, and air transport under the slogan, "Where there is a road, there is hope."
He also announced that the government is preparing to further upgrade the over 500-kilometre National Road No. 7 all the way to the Cambodia-Laos border. He recalled that Cambodia and Laos officially launched a Transit Transport Corridor on June 22, 2026, to facilitate the export of Cambodian agricultural and agro-industrial products to China via Laos.
Samdech Thipadei took the opportunity to call on motorists to strictly observe traffic laws, drive within speed limits, avoid overloading vehicles, and help protect national infrastructure.
The reconstructed section of National Road No. 7 stretches 45.489 kilometres from Skun Roundabout in Cheung Prey district to the Kizuna Bridge Roundabout in Kampong Cham city. The project was carried out by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the technical supervision of Guangzhou Wanan Engineering Consulting Co., Ltd. Construction took 27 months and was completed on June 15, 2026 – 15 months ahead of schedule.
The project cost more than US$117 million, financed through a concessional loan from the Government of the People's Republic of China, with counterpart funding from the Royal Government of Cambodia covering land acquisition, mine and unexploded ordnance clearance, and taxes.
