Cambodian Red Cross Delivers Lifeline to 800 Vulnerable Families Amid El Niño Crisis
AKP Phnom Penh, July 03, 2026 --
The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) rushed critical aid to 800 of the most vulnerable families in Thbong Khmum province on Friday, as the country braces for the worsening impacts of the 2026 El Niño heatwave.
Led by Dr. Uy Samonn, Director of the CRC’s Disaster Management Department, the delegation delivered the relief package at Uppalavatey Pagoda in Kroch Chhmar district. The mission was carried out under the directive of CRC President Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen.
Dr. Uy Samonn conveyed the CRC President’s deep sympathy to affected residents and reaffirmed the CRC’s pledge that “no vulnerable citizen will be left behind.” He noted that all aid was financed through public donations collected during World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8.
Each family received: 30 kg of rice; 1 box of instant noodles; 10 cans of sardines; 6 bottles of soy sauce; 2 bottles of cooking oil; 2 bottles of shampoo; 1 basic necessities kit; and 20,000 Riels (about US$5) in cash.
Beyond food and cash, the CRC turned the event into a vital outreach clinic – offering emergency awareness sessions on maternal and infant health, chronic disease prevention, and climate adaptation strategies to help families endure the extreme heat.
The delegation also extended support to Uppalavatey Pagoda’s monastic community, donating 200 kg of rice, assorted food, beverages, and 5 million Riel (US$1,250). The Buddhist monk chief received 2 million Riel (US$500), 12 resident monks were given 400,000 Riel (US$100) each, and elderly devotees were presented with white cloth and cash grants, ensuring that both the faithful and the frail received protection in a time of escalating climate crisis.
