KOICA Hosts Photo Exhibition to Drive Plastic Waste Reduction in Phnom Penh Schools
AKP Phnom Penh, June 26, 2026 -- The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Cambodia Office, in partnership with the Cambodia-Korea Alumni Association (CAMKAA) and the Phnom Penh Department of Environment (PPDE), hosted on June 26 the “Environmental Awareness Activity 2026: School-Based Plastic Waste Reduction Photo Competition and Exhibition” at Chea Sim Samaki High School.
The event marked the culmination of a multi-phase environmental awareness initiative that engaged 200 high school students from five Phnom Penh schools: Trapeang Sala Lower Secondary School, Hun Sen Chumpuvorn High School, Boeung Brey High School, Preah Sisowath High School, and Chea Sim Samaki High School.
Building on an intensive 11-day Environmental Education and Basic Photography Training programme conducted from June 1-11, 2026, students developed a deeper understanding of plastic pollution and sustainable waste management while learning how to communicate environmental messages through creative visual storytelling.
Following field documentation activities from June 11-19, students submitted photographs highlighting plastic waste challenges and community-based solutions. Selected works were exhibited during the event, demonstrating how young people can inspire positive environmental action through photography and advocacy.
A special Award Ceremony honoured outstanding student photographers for their creativity, originality, and commitment to environmental awareness.
Winners received certificates of recognition and eco-friendly prizes, including 1,000-litre water tanks, 600-litre water jars, and 120-litre dustbins, supporting improved waste and water management practices in participating schools.
The ceremony was attended by approximately 250 participants, including students, teachers, school administrators, government representatives, environmental stakeholders, and development partners.
Representatives from KOICA, CAMKAA, and PPDE reaffirmed their shared commitment to empowering youth, promoting Cambodia’s 4R Strategy (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and advancing environmental stewardship through education and community engagement.
