Cambodia Calls for Protection of Migrant Workers at UN Human Rights Council
AKP Phnom Penh, June 22, 2026 -- Cambodia has reiterated the importance of protecting the rights of migrant workers and ensuring they are not subjected to discrimination or become victims of political tensions.
During the 62nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on June 22, H.E. Ambassador KE Sovann, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, delivered Cambodia’s national statement under Agenda Item 3: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants.
In his statement, Ambassador KE Sovann expressed Cambodia’s support for the Special Rapporteur's call on States to uphold their human rights obligations towards all migrants and prevent discrimination, violence, and other abuses.
He drew particular attention to recent context of tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, during which Cambodian migrant workers reportedly faced xenophobia, hate speech, discriminatory treatment, and violence.
The Ambassador underscored that migrant workers must never be targeted or discriminated against on the basis of their nationality, nor become victims of political tensions or interstate conflicts.
He further called upon host countries to take all necessary measures to protect migrant workers in accordance with their obligations under international human rights law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
