Cambodia, Malaysia Sign MoU to Strengthen Cooperation in Information and Media Sectors
AKP Phnom Penh, June 20, 2026 --
Cambodia and Malaysia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in information, journalism, and media development, marking a new step in enhancing communication and people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.
The agreement was advanced during a meeting between H.E. Prak Thaveak Amida, Undersecretary of State and Head of the Secretariat for International Cooperation at Cambodia’s Ministry of Information, representing Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra, and H.E. Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, Malaysia’s Minister of Communications, on the sidelines of Malaysia’s National Journalists’ Day 2026 (HAWANA 2026) in Penang on June 20.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation in information and media to promote greater mutual understanding between the peoples of Cambodia and Malaysia and to support positive promotion of tourism, culture, trade, and bilateral connectivity.
The discussions also addressed shared challenges in the digital era, including fake news, misinformation, the growing use of artificial intelligence in media, digital security concerns, and the need to strengthen responsible and professional journalism.
On the occasion, the Cambodian side formally exchanged the signed MoU on cooperation in information and media development with Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications. The agreement aims to strengthen, expand, and develop bilateral cooperation based on equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect.
Under the MoU, cooperation will focus on several key areas, including news and information exchange, radio and television programme exchanges, human resource development, journalist training, digital technology adoption, AI applications in media, combating misinformation, and collaboration in film and documentary production.
To support implementation, both countries agreed to designate focal institutions and coordinating bodies to oversee daily cooperation activities. Planned partnerships include cooperation between AKP and BERNAMA on news exchange; RNK, TVK, and RTM on broadcasting and media technology; training programmes with IPPTAR; collaboration with MCMC on addressing misinformation; and cooperation with FINAS in film and video production.
H.E. Prak Thaveak Amida reaffirmed Cambodia’s readiness to work closely with Malaysia to turn the agreement into practical initiatives that deliver concrete and mutually beneficial outcomes. He also proposed holding the first technical meeting during the upcoming ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information (SOMRI) meeting in Brunei to develop an annual action plan and launch initial activities.
In response, H.E. Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil welcomed the partnership and reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Cambodia in information, communications, and media. He agreed to assign senior information officials to continue technical discussions and proposed preparing for the first ministerial-level virtual meeting with Cambodia’s Minister of Information.
Both sides described the signing of the MoU as an important milestone in advancing friendship, mutual understanding, and effective cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia within both bilateral and ASEAN frameworks.
