AKP Phnom Penh, June 03,2026 --
The Government of Japan has thrown its full support behind a peaceful resolution to the long-running border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, while urging a complete normalisation of relations between the two neighbours, a senior Japanese diplomat said Monday.
The commitment came from H.E. Hayashi Teiji, Japan’s Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation, during a June 1 meeting in Phnom Penh with H.E. Lt. Gen. Rath Dararath, Secretary of State for the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence.
The two officials discussed ways to expand Japan-Cambodia defence cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
H.E. Lt. Gen. Rath Dararath briefed the Japanese envoy on the current border situation and reiterated Cambodia’s firm dedication to resolving the issue peacefully, in line with international law and existing bilateral agreements. He also thanked Japan for its ongoing participation in ceasefire monitoring missions organised by the Military Attaché Corps in Phnom Penh (MACPP).
In response, Ambassador Hayashi confirmed Tokyo’s stance, stating that Japan is ready to back all constructive efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict and restoring fully normalized relations between Cambodia and Thailand.
