Cambodia Holds “Day of Reckoning” Event to Promote Unity Through Historical Reflection
AKP Phnom Penh, May 28, 2026 --
Thousands of people from all walks of life gathered this evening at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh to commemorate the “Day of Reckoning,” an event aimed at encouraging national reflection on Cambodia’s past and promoting unity and development.
The event was initiated by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) to share lessons from the country’s history so that the public, especially younger generations, can better understand and remember the hardships Cambodia has endured.
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hun Many, Minister of Civil Service and President of the UYFC, said the purpose of the commemoration is to reflect on past tragedies and challenges faced by Cambodians, including the Khmer Rouge regime, the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent border tensions.
He stressed that the event is not intended to foster hatred, but to transform historical experiences into national strength, solidarity, and unity, while helping to prevent the recurrence of past tragedies.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed pride in being Cambodian and paid tribute to frontline personnel for their sacrifices and courage, while extending sympathy to citizens who remain displaced and unable to return to their homes.
H.E. Hun Many further called on citizens to continue supporting the Royal Government led by Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet in addressing national issues and advancing development goals.
A Phnom Penh resident, Mr. So Sochivorn, said the event reminded him of difficult periods in recent years, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and other national challenges.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster, but the most unforgettable event is what has happened along our border with Thailand since May 28, 2025,” he said.
Meanwhile, Miss Phan Pisey, a student attendee, said the commemoration helped her better understand both past conflicts and the country’s development progress.
Through this event, organisers hope to reinforce the message that, regardless of circumstances, Cambodia remains resilient and capable of overcoming challenges through unity and mutual support.
In addition, the event also serves as a platform to encourage broader public participation and partnerships in promoting national awareness, strengthening social solidarity, and preparing the country to face future threats and risks.
