S. Korea's retail sale rises 7.2 pct in April

South Korea's retail sale rose by 7.2 pct year on year in April, thanks to a fast sales recovery in department stores, data released by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources showed Wednesday.
The combined revenue among major offline and online retailers grew faster than an increase of 5.6 percent in the previous month.
Revenue of online retailers expanded 7.5 percent, and sales by offline retailers gained 6.7 percent.
Sales by discount outlets retreated 6.6 percent, but revenue for department stores jumped 21.7 percent last month, keeping an upward trend for 10 straight months since July last year.
Food purchase in offline stores fell 1 percent, but demand for home appliances, clothing and sports items mounted in double figures.
Food demand in cyberspace swelled 9.7 percent, and online sales of cosmetics logged a double-digit expansion.
Online demand for service, including travel, food delivery and e-coupon purchase, climbed 3.4 percent last month.
