Phnom Penh Launches Phase 2 of "Say No to Fake News" Campaign to Boost Media Literacy
AKP Phnom Penh, May 25, 2026 --
The Phnom Penh Municipal Department of Information on Monday launched the second phase of its "Say No to Fake News" campaign at Bak Touk High School, aiming to strengthen media literacy and enhance digital security among youth.
The campaign, which officially debuted nationwide on May 18, seeks to educate the public on navigating the modern digital landscape safely.
Monday's awareness event drew an audience of more than 1,500 participants, including school students, and representatives from the Khan 7 Makara Administration and the Phnom Penh Municipal Department of Education, Youth and Sport.
Led by the Ministry of Information, the anti-disinformation initiative spans across Cambodia through a collaborative framework involving both public and private sectors.
At the sub-national level, provincial and municipal information departments are coordinating directly with local administrations and education authorities to maximise the campaign's reach.
According to Ms. Pich Sithoeun, Director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Department of Information, the second phase focuses heavily on preventative education, equipping citizens with the tools needed to identify and mitigate the risks of online falsehoods.
The campaign outlines several core strategies to combat the spread of misinformation: Encouraging citizens—especially youth—to break the habit of impulsive social media sharing and to distinguish legitimate news from deepfakes and AI-generated disinformation; Advising the public to secure personal data and social media accounts by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) and maintaining strict password hygiene; Urging users to refrain from sharing unverified rumors and to actively report malicious, defamatory, or fraudulent content on digital platforms; Promoting grassroots media literacy by encouraging individuals to educate family members and neighbours on safe digital practices.
By fostering a culture of digital responsibility, the Ministry of Information aims to safeguard the integrity of Cambodia's public discourse and maintain overall social stability.
