Royal Cambodian Embassy Confirms Mango Authenticity After Labeling Error Triggers Origin Dispute in South Korea
AKP Phnom Penh, May 20, 2026 --
The Royal Cambodian Embassy in South Korea issued a formal clarification on Wednesday, certifying that “Romdoul” branded mangoes currently on sale in the local market are 100 percent Cambodian in origin, following social media allegations of product mislabeling.
In an official statement, the embassy confirmed that premium Romdoul mangoes are imported and distributed by Hyundai Agro (Cambodia) Co., Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Corporation, which has made substantial investments in Cambodia’s agricultural sector.
The clarification came after viral videos and online posts accused retailers of selling Thai-grown mangoes under Cambodian branding. In response, the embassy dispatched its commercial attaché to inspect the supermarket in question.
The store owner admitted to an administrative error, acknowledging that Cambodian origin labels had been mistakenly affixed to Thai mangoes. According to the embassy, the retailer confirmed the issue has been corrected.
“Our commercial attaché issued a strict warning to the store owner to exercise utmost caution,” the embassy stated, adding that deliberate misrepresentation of country of origin could lead to severe legal penalties.
The embassy urged all retailers and distributors in South Korea to strictly comply with origin-labeling laws, warning that further attempts to pass off foreign produce as Cambodian would face legal action.
Consumers were also encouraged to report suspected labelling fraud directly to Cambodian diplomatic channels.
