Cambodia Hands Over Thai National Arrested for Illegal Border Crossing at Cham International Checkpoint
AKP Phnom Penh, May 15, 2026 -- Cambodian authorities have returned a Thai national who illegally crossed deep into Cambodian territory in Oddar Meanchey province on April 26, 2026, to the Thai side at the Cham International Border Checkpoint in Anlong Veng district on Friday.
The handover took place at 10:59 a.m. on May 15, 2026, under the coordination mechanism of the Cambodia-Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC).
According to the Ministry of National Defence, the individual was detained in accordance with Cambodian law after illegally entering Cambodian territory. The repatriation followed a request made through the RBC liaison working group on May 13, 2026, as part of regional coordination efforts.
After legal review and assessment, Brigadier General Nit Narong, Deputy Chief of Staff and Head of the Cambodian RBC Secretariat of Military Region 4, was assigned to transfer the individual to Major General Kampanat Waphansu, Chief of Staff and Head of the Thai RBC Secretariat of Army Area 2, for formal reception on the Thai side.
The process was carried out in accordance with humanitarian principles, the Ministry underlined.
On the occasion, both sides held discussions aimed at strengthening mutual trust and enhancing cooperation in preventing and countering misinformation and incitement.
They also reaffirmed the importance of fully and sincerely implementing all previously agreed arrangements to promote long-term peace, stability, and safety along the border.
The Thai side expressed appreciation to Cambodia for its close cooperation in addressing daily border-related issues and for facilitating the safe return of Thai nationals who had entered Cambodian territory illegally.
