DPM Sun Chanthol Emphasises EU as a Key Pillar for Cambodia’s Economic and Institutional Growth
AKP Phnom Penh, May 13, 2026 --
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Sun Chanthol, First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development (CDC) has hailed the European Union (EU) as a key pillar for Cambodia’s development, noting its critical role in driving the nation’s economic growth and institutional modernisation.
H.E. Sun Chanthol made remark when he represented the Royal Government of Cambodia to deliver a congratulatory speech on the occasion of the 76th Anniversary of Europe Day, organised on May 12 by the EU Delegation to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The ceremony was held in a pleasant atmosphere in the presence of H.E. Igor Driesmans, EU Ambassador to Cambodia, with the participation of leaders from relevant ministries and institutions, ambassadors of EU member states, representatives of various diplomatic missions, and numerous national and international guests.
In his speech, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister expressed his sincere congratulations to the people and all EU member states and recalled the importance of the "Schuman Declaration" as the foundation of peace, stability, and prosperity for Europe, as well as a model for regional cooperation.
Additionally, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed that, the EU is one of Cambodia's most important development and trading partners. Cooperation within the Global Gateway framework and various aid programmes have been actively contributing to digital transformation, green development, and institutional capacity building in Cambodia.
He expressed firm belief that, based on friendship and mutual respect, Cambodia-EU relations will continue to grow even stronger for the mutual benefit of both nations, as well as for peace and sustainable development in the region and the world.
Europe Day is celebrated annually on May 9 to commemorate the anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" of 1950, which was the starting point of political and economic cooperation in Europe, aimed at maintaining sustainable peace and solidarity following World War II.
This day is not only a celebration of the achievements of peace and prosperity in the European region but also an opportunity for the EU to showcase shared values, freedom, and the strengthening of partnerships with countries worldwide, including the Kingdom of Cambodia.
