Information Minister Urges Media Digital Shift to Sustain Competitiveness
AKP Phnom Penh, May 12, 2026 --
Information Minister H.E. Neth Pheaktra has called on media outlets to accelerate digital content production and adapt to rapid technological shifts to ensure long-term viability in an increasingly competitive landscape.
During a meeting at the Ministry on Monday afternoon with H.E. Mrs. Dith Nita, Chairperson of Apsara Media Services (AMS), the Minister emphasised that traditional media – including newspapers, radio, and television – must undergo a "digital transformation" to survive.
"Traditional media outlets must integrate and transform within the digital context as a matter of necessity," H.E. Neth Pheaktra said. "Creating high-quality, professional, and engaging content is essential to remain competitive and adapt to the fast-evolving technological environment."
H.E. Minister noted that the rise of modern digital platforms has led to a global decline in traditional media revenue and viewership. This shift, he explained, is driven by changes in public consumption habits and a drop in commercial advertising as audiences move toward more accessible digital tools.
Despite these challenges, H.E. Neth Pheaktra underscored the enduring relevance of established news organisations. "Traditional media, while facing a diminished role, remains vital in providing verified, factual information to the public," he stated.
To bridge the gap, the Minister urged traditional broadcasters and publishers to expand their presence across multiple digital channels, including websites and social media platforms such as Facebook, Telegram, and TikTok. He warned that failure to adapt to the "new era" would leave outlets facing potential closure and a total loss of advertising revenue.
H.E. Neth Pheaktra reaffirmed the Ministry of Information’s commitment to collaborating with industry stakeholders to find sustainable solutions for both traditional and modern media platforms in the digital age.
