CRC President Highlights Critical Role of Midwives on National-International Midwife Day
AKP Phnom Penh, May 05, 2026 --
Samdech Kittipritthbindit Bun Rany Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Red Cross (CRC), has underscored the vital role of midwives in safeguarding maternal and newborn health, marking National-International Midwife Day on May 5 under the global theme “One Million More Midwives.”
In her message, Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen joined the Royal Government of Cambodia and the international community in recognising midwives as frontline health workers whose dedication and professionalism save lives daily, including in times of crisis and hardship.
“Midwives are at the heart of safe motherhood,” she said, noting their essential role in providing care throughout pregnancy, ensuring safe delivery, and supporting postnatal and newborn health. She emphasised that investing in midwives is key to strengthening the health and well-being of women, children, and families, and to securing the future of society.
Addressing the global call to increase the number of midwives, Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen highlighted Cambodia’s efforts to expand and improve the quality of midwifery services. She noted that the country has prioritised training midwives to meet both national and international standards, equipping them with decision-making authority, adequate resources, and leadership capacity.
She also pointed to Cambodia’s national theme – “Educated, empowered with decision-making authority and leadership: Cambodian Midwives for Every Mother and Every Birth” – as a reflection of the country’s commitment to addressing the global shortage of midwives.
The CRC President commended the Royal Government, particularly the Ministry of Health, for strengthening the healthcare system and advancing universal health coverage. However, she stressed the need for continued investment to increase both the number and quality of healthcare professionals, especially in rural and remote areas.
Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen expressed strong support for ongoing efforts to promote the midwifery profession, expand training programs, enhance professional ethics, and reduce maternal and newborn mortality. She also called for stronger collaboration among public institutions, private sector actors, and development partners.
She reaffirmed the CRC’s commitment to working closely with the Royal Government to raise public awareness on maternal and child health, disease prevention, hygiene, and access to clean water, highlighting the importance of a whole-of-society approach.
In her appeal, she urged pregnant women to seek regular health check-ups, deliver at health facilities with skilled personnel, and ensure proper postnatal care. She also called on families, communities, and stakeholders to support maternal health initiatives and improve conditions for midwives, particularly in underserved areas.
Samdech Bun Rany Hun Sen concluded by expressing hope that the observance would strengthen collective efforts to ensure safe, respectful, and quality care for every mother and newborn in Cambodia, while contributing to global goals, including addressing the shortage of one million midwives and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
