Free Bus Service Helps Nearly 120,000 People Travel Home for Khmer New Year
AKP Phnom Penh, April 22, 2026 --
Nearly 120,000 people used free public bus service to travel to their hometowns during the Khmer New Year holiday, helping reduce transport costs and support local economies.
The six-day service, operated from April 12 to 17 under the direct guidance of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, was organised by the Phnom Penh Capital Administration to assist citizens returning home for the traditional holiday.
According to official figures, a total of 119,490 passengers used the free transport service provided by the Phnom Penh City Bus Authority, an increase of 33,641 passengers, or 39 percent, compared with the previous period.
On average, each traveller would normally spend around 100,000 Riel (approximately US$25) for a round trip. The free service therefore helped save citizens an estimated total of 12 billion Riel, or around US$3 million.
The savings enabled many families to redirect spending toward other needs, including family gatherings, holiday celebrations, and charitable activities during the New Year period.
Beyond easing travel costs, the free transport initiative also helped stimulate local economic activity, as more money was spent in provincial communities instead of being used solely for transport expenses.
Each year, the Royal Government provides free bus services to help reduce travel costs for citizens during Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben (Festival for the Dead). For the 2026 New Year celebrations, 600 buses were deployed, 100 of which within Phnom Penh and 500 others between the capital and the provinces. In addition to free fares, each bus is equipped with air conditioning, and complimentary bottled water is provided to passengers at departure points to ensure comfort during the hot April weather.
