Khmer New Year Tourism Surge Underscores Cambodia’s Economic Resilience, Royal Government Says
AKP Phnom Penh, April 21, 2026 --
The Royal Government of Cambodia has highlighted the massive surge in domestic and international tourism during the recent Khmer New Year as a definitive indicator of the nation’s vibrant socio-economic health and its underlying economic resilience.
H.E. Pen Bona, Spokesperson for the Royal Government of Cambodia, stated during a press briefing on Tuesday that the widespread public celebration and high mobility of travellers reflect a stable and thriving society.
He emphasised that this success was supported by the Royal Government’s strategic interventions, including the effective management of fuel prices and the provision of free public transport, which eased the financial burden on citizens and sustained their livelihoods during the festive period.
"Maintaining socio-economic normalcy under challenging global conditions is not a coincidence," H.E. Pen Bona remarked at the Office of the Council of Ministers. "It is the direct result of the Royal Government’s visionary leadership and meticulous strategic planning."
Following the conclusion of the festivities, Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet extended his profound gratitude to provincial authorities, national working groups, and relevant ministries for ensuring the safety and joy of both citizens and international visitors.
The Prime Minister noted that the "Nokor Sankranta" events in Phnom Penh and provincial celebrations nationwide were designed not only to promote Khmer cultural identity but also to foster a spirit of national unity. He specifically honoured the "frontline" forces, expressing his appreciation to the Royal Cambodian armed forces stationed across the country for their unwavering commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In his concluding remarks, the Royal Government spokesperson reaffirmed that the Royal Government remains committed to a comprehensive development strategy—integrating diplomacy, economy, and social welfare—while maintaining the protection of its people and territory as its highest priority.
