Cambodia's Youth Union and Siem Reap Authorities Host Khmer New Year Celebration for Displaced Families
AKP Phnom Penh, March 26, 2026 --
The Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), in collaboration with Siem Reap provincial and Kralanh district authorities, organised a traditional "Sankranta" celebration on Wednesday at Wat Bo Khnar Techo to support displaced families currently residing in local safety centres.
The event, held ahead of the upcoming Khmer New Year, was designed to provide emotional support and festive joy to those unable to return to their homes. The celebration focused on preserving Cambodia's rich cultural heritage through communal religious ceremonies and traditional festivities.
Kralanh District Governor Sok Nareth detailed the day’s itinerary, which included a "Krong Porli" (blessing) ceremony, Buddhist chanting, and the offering of food to Buddhist monks to dedicate merits to fallen soldiers. Following the religious rites, attendees participated in the variety of traditional folk games and concluding with a communal "solidarity lunch" featuring Num Banh Chok (traditional Khmer noodles).
Heng Soknang, a permanent member of the UYFC, emphasised that the primary goal of hosting the Sankranta at a safety centre was to ensure that displaced citizens remain connected to their national identity. "This programme is about providing encouragement and mental strength," he said. "By creating a joyful atmosphere through traditional games and shared merit-making, we demonstrate the solidarity between our leadership, the monkhood, and our citizens."
Deputy Provincial Governor Dy Rado noted that provincial leaders, including Council President Ly Samrith and Governor Prak Sophoan, prioritised the well-being of displaced families who remain in temporary shelters. He added that the administration worked closely with various departments, NGOs, and philanthropists to ensure the 2026 New Year celebrations reached those most in need of community support.
