600 Public Buses Prepared for Khmer New Year Holiday Travel
AKP Phnom Penh, March 07, 2026 -- The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has prepared a total of 600 buses to provide free public transport between Phnom Penh and the provinces during the upcoming Khmer New Year holiday in April.
The announcement was issued this morning following instructions from Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet during the closing ceremony of the annual meeting of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) on Friday.
According to the announcement, the free bus service will operate from April 12 to 17.
Of the total buses, 100 will operate within Phnom Penh, including providing airport shuttle services (Airport Express Bus).
The remaining 500 buses will run back and forth between Phnom Penh and the provinces, serving six major destinations. Each passenger will also be provided with free drinking water during the journey.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has also called on transport business owners to maintain normal transport service fees during the New Year celebrations in order to help ease the financial burden on citizens.
The three-day Khmer New Year celebration in 2026, the Year of the Horse, will begin on April 14.
During the holiday, large numbers of people are expected to return to their hometowns, visit pagodas, travel to tourism destinations, and participate in various entertainment activities to celebrate the New Year.
The Royal Government provides free bus services each year to help reduce travel costs for citizens during one of the country’s largest national holidays.
