British Ambassador H.E. Dominic Williams conducted an assessment of Cambodia’s volatile frontier situation on Wednesday, surveying the aftermath of recent hostilities while praising the Royal Government’s escalating offensive against regional cybercrime syndicates.

The visit to Banteay Meanchey province highlights a dual crisis for the region: a fragile ceasefire with Thailand that has left thousands of civilians displaced, and the ongoing struggle to dismantle the sophisticated online scam operations currently proliferating across Southeast Asia.

Banteay Meanchey Governor H.E. Oum Reatrey reported that despite a December ceasefire, Thai military blockades – including shipping containers and barbed wire – continue to prevent the inhabitants of six Cambodian villages from returning to their homes.

The governor revealed the destruction of over 2,000 homes and severe damage to vital infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.

Ambassador Williams lauded Cambodia’s "decisive actions" in shuttering scam centres, noting that these criminal networks are increasingly porous, with similar illicit activity rising sharply in neighbouring Thailand.

The UK envoy urged both nations to maintain the integrity of the Dec. 27 ceasefire to ensure a swift transition from military tension to civilian recovery.
