Cambodia Urges ASEAN to Sustain Support for Peace
AKP Phnom Penh, January 30, 2026 -- H.E. PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, briefed ASEAN Foreign Ministers on the latest developments along the Cambodia-Thailand border, following the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on Dec. 22, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur.
According to a press release issued this evening by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Cebu, Philippines on Jan. 29, the Cambodian top diplomat updated his counterparts on the implementation of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting of Dec. 27, 2025, which established the second ceasefire, and expressed Cambodia’s appreciation to Malaysia, as ASEAN Chair in 2025, and ASEAN Member States for supporting the ceasefire, peaceful dispute settlement, and the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).
The Deputy Prime Minister said the GBC meeting produced arrangements on de-escalation measures and peaceful resolution in accordance with international law, with both sides agreeing that all measures are without prejudice to border demarcation. He stressed the importance of consolidating the ceasefire through communication, trust-building, and coordinated efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability.
Despite positive progress, he noted that some activities remain inconsistent with the Joint Statement, particularly regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning of risks to de-escalation efforts. He reported that 9,635 Cambodians from 2,448 families are still unable to return home safely, with many living in temporary displacement sites and children unable to attend school.
Reaffirming Cambodia’s full commitment to the ceasefire, he called on ASEAN to continue supporting the peaceful settlement of the dispute in line with international law and the principle of non-use of force, underscoring ASEAN’s responsibility to safeguard regional peace and stability.
