Cambodia Central Bank Chief and AMRO Discuss Digital Payment Success and Economic Outlook
AKP Phnom Penh, January 23, 2026 -- National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) Governor H.E. Dr. Chea Serey met with a delegation from the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) on Thursday to discuss the nation’s economic resilience, the rapid evolution of digital finance, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in the banking sector.
The meeting, led by AMRO Deputy Director Mr. Yasuto Watanabe at the NBC’s Wat Phnom headquarters, focused on Cambodia’s macroeconomic performance and the ongoing modernisation of its financial infrastructure.
Mr. Yasuto Watanabe commended Cambodia’s digital payment ecosystem, noting that the Kingdom's innovations have become a global benchmark. "Many countries now look to Cambodia as a model for developing efficient and inclusive payment systems," he said, while reaffirming AMRO’s commitment to deepening technical cooperation with the central bank.
In reply, Governor Chea Serey highlighted the strategic importance of these technological advancements in promoting the use of the Khmer Riel and broadening financial inclusion.
She expressed gratitude for AMRO’s continued support in capacity building for NBC officials, which has been vital in navigating the complexities of modern central banking.
On the economic front, both parties acknowledged a positive trajectory driven by diversifying export portfolios and expanding international markets.
However, they remained cautious regarding the domestic recovery, noting that the construction and real estate sectors have yet to regain full momentum despite the broader industrial growth.
