Cambodian Water Minister Meets WFP Country Director to Strengthen Cooperation on Climate Resilience
AKP Phnom Penh, January 15, 2026 --
H.E. Thor Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology of Cambodia, held a working meeting in Phnom Penh on Thursday morning with Ms. Park Kyung-nan, the newly appointed Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Cambodia.
The minister welcomed Ms. Park and commended WFP for its active support of initiatives in natural disaster risk management, social protection, and promoting climate-resilient nutrition in the region. He specifically acknowledged the organisation’s continued contributions to development and humanitarian work in Cambodia.
Minister Thor Chetha outlined his ministry’s key priorities, which include ensuring water security through the construction, restoration, and modernisation of irrigation systems, enhancing hydrological and meteorological services, and modernising legal and policy frameworks. He emphasised capacity building and strengthening cooperation with development partners, expressing readiness to expand collaboration with WFP in the fields of water resources and meteorology.
WFP and the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology have been collaborating on several fronts. This includes capacity-building for ministry technical staff on climate risk analysis, cooperation on sharing hydro-meteorological data, and integrating data on hazards, vulnerability, and food security. The partnership also involves sharing satellite and remote sensing data to support development planning and Cambodia’s roadmap for the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative.
