ASEAN Observers Inspect Cambodian Border Sites Damaged in Thai Aggressive Attacks
AKP Phnom Penh, January 14, 2026 ––
An ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) on Wednesday inspected the Choam international border crossing in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province, as well as nearby public and private sites, following reported damage from earlier Thai military attacks, local authorities said.
The inspection covered locations in Anlong Veng district, including civilian homes and infrastructure that provincial officials say were affected by recent cross-border shelling and attacks by Thai invading forces.
Mr. Met Measpheakdey, Deputy Governor and spokesperson for Oddar Meanchey province, said the ASEAN team conducted on-the-ground assessments to verify the situation.
“Following the AOT’s field evaluation, I requested that the team convey the factual circumstances of the attacks, along with the suffering and losses endured by civilians in Oddar Meanchey province, so that justice can be duly considered,” he said.
The visit comes after a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand took effect on Dec. 27, 2025. Since then, and up to Jan. 13, ASEAN observers, coordinated by the Cambodian side, have carried out inspections and verification missions along key border areas.
These include sensitive locations such as the Preah Vihear temple zone and surrounding civilian infrastructure, which Cambodian authorities say sustained significant damage during what they describe as incursions by Thai forces.
