U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Encouraging Full Compliance with Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire
AKP Phnom Penh, January 10, 2026 --
The United States, under the leadership of President Trump, remains firmly committed to urging full compliance with the ceasefire, further de-escalation and resumption of the bilateral border demarcation process in order to achieve lasting peace and stability between the two countries.
The commitment was reiterated by H.E. Michael George DeSombre, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, during a meeting in Phnom Penh on Jan. 10 with H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Assistant Secretary DeSombre also welcomed the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, who have now reunited with their families.
Addressing the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, H.E. Prak Sokhonn emphasised that Cambodia's priorities are to maintain the ceasefire, allow all the displaced civilians to return to their homes, and expedite demarcation work. He reiterated Cambodia's deep appreciation to the U.S., in particular President Donald J. Trump, whose steadfast leadership played a pivotal role in facilitating the ceasefire on July 28, 2025 and the landmark agreement reached by Cambodia and Thailand in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 26, 2025.
He further underlined that Cambodia highly values the U.S.' continued commitment to encouraging the full implementation of the ceasefire, as outlined in the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee signed on Dec. 27, 2025.
Besides, both sides expressed satisfaction with the continued deepening of bilateral relations between Cambodia and the U.S., particularly in the areas of trade and investment, as well as defence and security cooperation. The U.S. welcomed Air Cambodia's decision to purchase at least ten Boeing aircraft, underscoring growing economic ties between the two countries.
The two sides also agreed on the importance of further strengthening cooperation in combating cybercrime, which affects many countries worldwide, particularly online scams. In this regard, H.E. PRAK Sokhonn expressed appreciation to the United States for extending assistance of US$10 million to support capacity-building for Cambodia's law enforcement agencies.
The Cambodian top diplomat further expressed gratitude to the U.S. for allocating US$15 million to help stabilise the livelihoods of displaced border communities in Cambodia and Thailand, as well as an additional US$10 million to support humanitarian demining efforts in Cambodia.
