First-Ever LNG Power Plant on Course to Operate Late This Year
AKP Phnom Penh, January 06, 2026 --
The country’s first-ever LNG-fired power plant with energy capacity of 900 MW will be operational in its first phase by the end of 2026, with the second phase scheduled to be operational in 2027.
The updated information was made in an inspection visit on Jan. 5 by H.E. Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy to the construction site in Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong province.
He stated that that the plant will play an important role in providing additional electricity, strengthening national energy security, and enhancing the stability of Cambodia’s electricity grid.
With an investment of approximately US$1.35 billion, this is the first natural gas-fired power plant in Cambodia, invested by local company Royal Group.
H.E. Minister stressed Cambodia’s goal to boost the share of renewable energy to at least 70 percent by 2030, which would support both environmental sustainability and economic growth, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency.
