Some 15,000 Displaced Persons Begin Returning Home Amid Improved Situation

A total of 14,963 displaced persons had begun returning to their homes as of 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 29, following the entry into force of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, according to a press release issued this morning by the Ministry of Interior.
As a result, 596,926 displaced persons remain, including 311,599 women and 187,597 children, the release added.
At a press briefing this morning, H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defence, confirmed that the frontline situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border has remained calm since the ceasefire came into effect at 12:00 p.m. (local time) on Dec. 27, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Departments of Education, Youth, and Sports of Koh Kong and Battambang yesterday authorised educational institutions in Koh Kong province, as well as those in the districts of Samlot, Kamrieng, Sampov Loun, Phnom Proeuk, and Banon in Battambang province, to resume operations.
According to the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting held on Dec. 27, both sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, the resumption of peaceful border demarcation and demining activities, respect for international law, and the return of detained Cambodian soldiers, in line with the U.S.- and ASEAN-facilitated Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration.
