U.S. President Commends Cambodia and Thailand for Rapidly Reaching Ceasefire
AKP Phnom Penh, December 28, 2025 --
U.S. President Donald J. Trump has praised Cambodia and Thailand for rapidly reaching a ceasefire agreement that brought an end to 20 days of armed conflict.
“I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty,” he wrote in a social media post on Dec. 28.
President Trump also congratulated Cambodian and Thai leaders on what he described as their effectiveness in achieving a swift resolution. “It was FAST & DECISIVE, as all of these situations should be! The United States of America, as always, was proud to help!” he stressed.
The ceasefire came into effect at 12:00 p.m. (local time) on Dec. 27. It is stipulated in a Joint Statement adopted and signed at the 3rd Special Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting earlier on the same day.
In addition to the immediate ceasefire, the Joint Statement includes agreements on the protection of civilians, the resumption of peaceful border demarcation and demining work, respect for international law, and the return of detained Cambodian soldiers, in line with the U.S.- and ASEAN-facilitated Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration.
