Cambrew Seeks Collaboration in Tackling Excessive Promotions, Expresses Support for Informal Economy in Beverage Supply Chain News and Events Tuesday, 25 November 2025
AKP Phnom Penh, 25 November, 2025 --
Cambrew’s newly appointed Managing Director, Mr. Michiel Oerlemans, met with Minister Hem Vanndy to discuss cooperation, while also expressing concern about intense market competition driven by heavy promotional campaigns that have negatively affected the performance of the beverage sector overall.
Mr. Oerlemans introduced himself and his decades of experience in the beverage industry, including senior roles within the Carlsberg Group in Myanmar and Laos, before his appointment to lead the company’s operations in Cambodia.
Minister Vanndy welcomed the new Managing Director to Cambodia and commended Cambrew’s long-standing contribution as a responsible corporate citizen and taxpayer.
He reiterated that the Royal Government has placed a moratorium on new beer-production licenses—except for export-only purposes—while regulating excessive promotional practices that may encourage harmful consumption patterns. He emphasized that a race to the bottom through excessive promotion and discounting is not beneficial for the industry or consumers.
The Minister also requested Cambrew to increase the use of local content in its production to stimulate SME participation and to support informal-economy actors linked to the beverage supply chain—such as beer promotion workers, street vendors selling company beverages, and small depots—to register and access protections and benefits.
Mr. Oerlemans welcomed the initiative and confirmed that Cambrew will consider this support and promote the message as part of its CSR efforts.
