Cambodia Advances Water Security with 860 Million Cubic Metre Reservoir Project
AKP Phnom Penh, November 24, 2025 --
Cambodia is constructing what will be the nation's largest water storage facility, Reservoir No. 2, a major infrastructure project designed to transform year-round agricultural productivity and bolster flood control across Pursat province.
Located on the Pramoy River in the Rokat commune of Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province, the Reservoir No. 2 Development Project is anticipated to hold an immense 860 million cubic metres of water upon completion, according to project authorities.
The facility is a cornerstone of Cambodia's strategy to enhance water security and will deliver four critical benefits:
The 860 million cubic metre capacity will be leveraged to irrigate approximately 262,500 hectares of farmland. This significant expansion is set to stabilise and strengthen agricultural yields throughout both the dry and rainy seasons, marking a pivotal step toward food security.
A key design objective is to regulate water flow and substantially mitigate recurrent, devastating seasonal flooding in downstream areas of Pursat province, which have historically suffered significant economic and infrastructural damage.
By effectively managing the Pramoy River's water levels, the reservoir will reduce flood-related stress and damage to crucial local irrigation systems and essential public infrastructure.
The project is also expected to spur local economic activity by developing the surrounding areas into a promising natural eco-tourism destination.
Construction on the project commenced in January 2025 and, as of late November 2025, is approximately 40 percent complete. The Reservoir No. 2 facility is currently scheduled to be fully operational by December 2027.
